April 3 2020: Viruses in every headline, institutes nearly closed and public life pretty much in lock-down. Unusual but also busy and challenging times since we mounted a highly collaborative project to sequence the first SARS-CoV-2 genomes from Austria. Today we released the first 21 patient-derived SARS-CoV-2 genomes to the public databases GISAID and nextstrain.org. See also the phylogenetic tree below. We pledged to do another 980 virus genomes within the next few weeks (press release). This project is a community effort involving multiple people from CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Medical University of Vienna and several additional collaboration partners from across and beyond Austria. Additional partners are very much encouraged to contact us. Updates about our results will be presented here.
We are grateful that this project received funding by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF) through its COVID-19 Rapid Response Call.
